Basements in Australia have recently seen a significant spike in popularity and for good reason.
As the cost of land and housing continues to rise, homeowners and owner builders are beginning to realise the potential of basements as an additional living space.
If you’re looking for an eco-friendly and cost-effective way to build a basement, then Eco Block ICF (Insulated Concrete Forms) is the perfect solution.
We are currently completing a basement for a new Moonee Ponds home and we’re excited to tell you all about it below.
But first, let’s look at why basements are gaining traction in Australia and why Eco Block ICFs are an excellent option when building a basement.
Basement constructions: why build a basement?
Basements are becoming a popular addition to modern Australian homes, theycan be used as extra bedrooms, entertaining spaces, theatre rooms, wine cellars, a secure garage, or even as a quiet retreat for work or relaxation. The reasons to build a basement are endless.
A well-designed basement can significantly increase your property’s value and appeal to potential buyers if you ever decide to sell.
Basement construction methods Australia: why build a basement with ICF?
If you’re considering building a basement, ICF formwork is an excellent option.
This is because of its durability, and ability to provide superior insulation compared to traditional construction methods.
The material also offers excellent soundproofing properties that ensure peace and quiet in your home.
Additionally, ICF provides excellent protection against natural disasters such as cyclones and earthquakes due to its strength and robustness.
Basement climate control
Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs) also offer superior insulation properties that make them perfect for climate control. This is especially true when it comes to basements.
It is notoriously difficult to maintain comfortable temperatures in a basement, they tend to be cooler than the rest of the house due to being partially or completely underground.
ICFs have excellent thermal mass qualities, this allows them to retain heat during colder months and cool air during warmer months.
This makes them a great option for homeowners who want a more energy-efficient way of controlling the temperature in their basement spaces.
Moonee Ponds – ICF basement
Eco Block are currently working on a basement for a brand-new home at Moonee Ponds.
The basement at the base of the house has been constructed with Eco Block ICF and reaches a massive 3.2m high at the sides of the basement and 2.8m walls at back and front.
The 50 cubic metres of concrete in the walls means this basement will be able to withstand almost anything mother nature throws at it.
We have used the 330 wall system so the concrete walls are 202mm thick. We have also just finished the ramp retaining walls with eco-block ICF.
We’re thrilled at the progression of this job.
And the builders are happy and impressed at how easy it is to use the ICF Blocks.
